The Meg Wah (My Earth) team reflects on a critical issue affecting the communities along the Tinto-Ngasang route in the Manyu Division, South West Region of Cameroon as chimpanzees invade their villages. The team in the field surveyed to assess the impact of chimpanzee invasion on the local population in those Villages.
The survey revealed that the denizens in the said communities have been experiencing encounters with chimpanzees, which have been invading their communities. The residents shared their experiences, highlighting the challenges and dangers posed by these primates. For the chimpanzees to invade communities causing fear and other hazards to the villagers and bike riders it means their habitat has been tampered with. There is a need to conserve these species to avoid roaming around the villages.
Chimpanzees are one of our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, sharing about 98% of their DNA with humans. Native to the tropical forests and savannas of West and Central Africa, these great apes are part of the Hominidae family, including gorillas, orangutans, and humans. Chimpanzees are intelligent animals known for their problem-solving abilities, complex communication, and use of tools. They have dark hair, expressive faces, and long arms that help them move efficiently through the trees, although they also spend significant time on the ground.
Chimpanzees live in large, fluid social groups called communities that can consist of up to 100 individuals. Within these groups, they form strong social bonds through grooming, cooperation, and even sharing food. They are known to use tools like sticks to fish for termites or rocks to crack nuts which shows advanced cognitive skills. Communication among chimpanzees includes vocalizations, facial expressions, and body language. Despite their playful and curious nature, chimpanzees can also be territorial and aggressive, especially when defending their community or resources. Their complex social lives and emotional depth make them one of the most fascinating species in the animal kingdom.
